Lost: Via Domus

Based on the ABC serial of the same name, Lost will take place on a deserted island and allow players to unravel the mystery of that island as they strive to find a way home. Unfortunately, you don’t play one of the show’s pivotal characters; you're an unknown photographer called Elliott who just happens to be on that fateful flight. Though the game is being published by Ubisoft, it will be released in India officially for the PC by March 14, courtesy of e-Express Interactive. The price hasn’t been disclosed yet. Oh, and if you’re wondering, Via Domus means 'Way Home' in Latin. Deep, huh?

Conflict: Denied Ops

If generic co-op shooters are your thing, you may want to give Conflict: Denied Ops a shot since, well, it’s a generic co-op shooter. The game allows you to play as one of two characters, both with distinctive styles of gameplay. While one is more run-and-gun, the other is a strict disciple of stealth who dishes out death courtesy of his 7.62mm sniper rifle. While online reviews of this game haven’t been all that kind, the PC version will cost just Rs 699, so you don’t really lose much. If you're feeling rich, check out the version for Xbox360 (Rs 1999) or PS3 (Rs 2499). This game too will hit Indian shores by March 14.

Condemned 2: Bloodshot

In most FPS games, melee combat may be something of an afterthought, but in Condemned, it’s the star of the show as you smack the f**k out of hobos with a multitude of blunt as well as sharp objects (lead pipes, shovels, crowbars, axes, sledgehammers and so on). In addition, developer Monolith plans on taking Condemned 2 to the next level with fatalities, improved forensic mechanics, and a spanking new multiplayer mode. Unfortunately the game will not be making its way to Indian shores, so you’ll have to score your copy online.

Rainbow Six Vegas 2

As far as tactical shooters are concerned, the Rainbow Six Vegas series is the best out there (in my opinion) since it not only packs a killer single player campaign but its multiplayer is one of the best as well. As the name suggests the action’s still firmly rooted in Sin City AKA Las Vegas; the only difference is that you’ll be controlling Bishop instead of Mr Logan Keller, and unlike the first game players will now be able to fully customize their character in the single player campaign as well (total whoa! moment). Also expect improved visuals, smarter AI, newer commands, better variety of weapons, and more.

Even though this game is being released internationally on March 18, it’ll make its way to Indian shores only by April 11.

Army of Two

Army of Two can be simply described as a story of two mercenaries backed by a private organization who love blowing sh*t up and saving the day while they’re at it. And by saving the day I mean killing tons of terrorists and making corny jokes about the entire affair. While the story is nothing to write home about, the game seems to have enough tricks up its sleeve to entertain fans of tactical as well as co-operative shooters. If you’re a bit of a loner, the game’s Partner Artificial Intelligence (PAI) will control the second character. EA claims that this system is so effective you really won’t miss another human. Expect the game to hit India by mid-March.

Frontlines: Fuel of War

Frontlines: Fuel of War takes place in a dystopian future where the Earth is facing a major energy crisis. As expected, humans who can never seem to get along during such times are at constant war with each other, and two major factions have emerged in this Fuel for war; the Western Coalition and the Red Star Alliance. The game bears a strong trace of Battlefield since it's being developed by Kaos Studios, the same dudes behind the highly popular Desert Combat mod for Battlefield 1942. The PS3 version of this game has been canceled, but the PC version should hit stores by March 14 for just Rs 699, with the Xbox360 version releasing soon after.

Dark Sector

When unveiled at E3 2005, Dark Sector was to be something of a Metal Gear Solid in space, but somewhere down the line the game's focus shifted from a sci-fi setting to a post-apocalyptic war-torn setting involving mutants and a lead character who dishes out death and pain courtesy of his infected arm that now resembles a three pronged blade called the Glaive. The game will play out like your standard third person shooter with a Gears of War-ish cover system accompanied with certain Resident Evil-esqe 'HOMG! WTF was that?' moments. I spoke to a couple of local distributors regarding this game and as expected none of them will be importing it to India, so it's online shopping to the rescue again once the game releases on March 28.

According to reports, the face-chopping sequel will have you murdering rival ninjas in real-world environments, including settings in Tokyo, Venice and Times Square in New York, although we wouldn't count on there being passer-by grannies to punch. The fighting system has been enhanced with improved enemy AI and new moves. Enemies can perform co-operative attacks, while Ryu will get a new Obliteration technique - a series of fatal blows delivered if you hit Y immediately after removing an enemy limb. Ninja Gaiden 2 releases exclusively for the Xbox 360 on June 3,2008.

I’m not a big Star Wars fan and I find the whole universe ultra-geeky, but one look at this game’s insane physics (combined with some crazy over-the-top force powers) had me fantasizing about the Dark Side. The Force unleashed will put players into the boots of Darth Vader’s secret apprentice and will take place between Star Wars: Episode III Revenge of the Sith and Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope.

When Crytek and Ubisoft parted ways, the Far Cry franchise (which, by the way, was developed by Crytek) stuck with the French publisher while the German developer decided to make our PCs spasm with Crysis. Far Cry 2 will still retain the sandbox feel of the original game but this time round the action has shifted to Africa and will apparently take the whole “Go anywhere, Do anything” ideology to the next level by offering players over 50 square miles to mess around with (remember, the vast expanses of Oblivion just extended to around 16 square miles).

Oh and this time, you’ll be able to heal yourself by actually ripping the bullet out from your wound with your bare hands… whoa! Unfortunately this game is a PC exclusive right now but we’re hoping Ubisoft change their minds really fast.

If you’ve played the previous MGS games, you’re bound to be super-horny for this one! After all, it’s going to be bigger than ever with its classic cinematic moments, its intriguing wtf-arousing storyline and extremely deep, lovable gameplay. If you’re a fan of Hideo Kojima’s work, you better keep an eye out for this one.

While the name may sound a bit similar to the werewolves VS vampires flick of the same name, the next iteration of Tomb Raider will not feature any of the above mentioned oddities and will take place after the events of Tomb Raider Legend. A brand new engine is being developed for the game by Crystal Dynamics that’ll boast of some mad, ultra realistic lighting and weather effects.

I’m not a big fan of American football but the only reason this game’s managed to catch my eye is because it’s being made using Natural Motion’s Euphoria engine along with AGEIA’s PhysX engine – which means that not only will tackles look highly realistic (and painful) but each tackle will play out differently... or so the developers claim.

Sybase Tuesday launched its strike in the cluster-database market, releasing Adaptive Server Enterprise Cluster Edition to compete with the likes of Oracle's Real Application Clusters.

Sybase's offering is aimed at IT shops that require high availability from their data centers. It uses shared-disk clustering, where a number of ASE server instances is grouped into a cluster seen as a single system managing the same set of data. This allows application workloads to be balanced among the instances. The software automatically migrates connections if a node fails, according to the company.

Noel Yuhanna, a Forrester Research analyst covering database technologies, said Sybase has made a wise move.

"They've realized they need to innovate to stay competitive and they're doing that," he said. "I think it's a good move and makes them comparable in certain situations with Oracle RAC."

While most companies employ some type of failover technology in their data centers, it may take effect in minutes, not seconds, Yuhanna said. "Companies who want it to happen really fast, that's when shared-disk clustering can really help," he said.

"It's only about five to 10 percent of the applications in an organization that would really need that up-to-the second [performance]," Yuhanna added.

Sybase hasn't necessarily surpassed Oracle's capabilities, according to Yuhanna. Its new product might be more suitable for "smaller environments, or those that are only focused around Linux and Solaris," he said, adding that word hasn't yet circled back from customers regarding the product's performance.

David Jonker, senior product marketing manager in the ASE group at Sybase, said the company worked with 12 large companies on a technology preview version of the software. He declined to name them, and said none had agreed to speak to the media. ASE Cluster Edition is compatible with systems running Red Hat Enterprise Linux 4 and 5 (x86_64); Solaris 9 and 10 on SPARC (64-bit); and SUSE Linux 9 and 10 (x86_64). Sybase did not release pricing information.

Ladies and Gentlemen, the Xbox 360 boasts the best new generation Japanes RPG released till date. But of course, I will have to start right from the top.
You play the role of Kaim, a 1000 year old immortal soldier with no memory of his past. Along with his personal anguish, the world is on the brink of war, thanks to the political influences of the different cities that span this world. He teams up with fellow immortals (also clueless about their memories) and mortals, as the story progresses to prevent an all-out war... and recall memories of his past in the process.
Being true to the JRPG tradition, the gameplay is very linear with the only control in your hands being in the way you upgrade your character with add-ons and the party you select for specific missions. Think of it more as a glorified adventure game than an RPG in its true sense of the word.
